Chalk Lake Campground belongs to the federal side of Colorado camping, close to Nathrop and managed under San Isabel National Forest. It sits about 97 miles southwest of downtown Denver as the crow flies, with Nathrop as the nearest supply town on our board.

Campers rate it 4.8 of 5 across 77 reviews on RVParks.us, our sister directory, where the photo sets and firsthand reports live.

The drive from the metro heads out the US-285 corridor through the Platte River country. Fuel up before you leave town, since close-in prices beat every mountain and small-town pump, and build in a margin for summer weekend traffic on the way back. As Colorado camping runs go, this one earns its drive time.

It sits near 8,742 feet, high enough that summer nights drop hard after sunset. Shoulder season here is gorgeous and lightly booked; just confirm the operating dates before a spring or fall trip.

Set expectations before you pack: federal campgrounds mostly run dry, meaning no hookups at the site. Arrive with full fresh tanks and charged batteries, know your generator's posted hours, and plan tank capacity around the length of the stay. The rigs in our fleet list tank sizes plainly, and we'll match you to one that can go the distance off-grid.

Booking a Site Here

Sites here book through recreation.gov on a rolling window, and summer weekends vanish within minutes of opening. Set a calendar reminder for the morning your window releases and be logged in early. First come first served loops, where they exist, fill by Friday noon in July.

Pairing It With a Camper

From the Denver metro this is an easy launch either way: pick the camper up in town and you're backing in with daylight left, or have our crew quote the haul using the listing's radius and fee. Reserve the site in your own name first, then match the rig to the pad length and hookups. Our camper listings state length, tanks and power draw plainly, and we answer campground fit questions all day.

Contact & Location

Season dates, fees and site rules change. Confirm the current details with the operator before you commit a weekend, and if something on this page has gone stale, tell us so the next camper gets it right.

What Campers Say

★★★★☆

Chalk Lake Campground is one of my favorite places to bring my family and friends. It's right by a stream and just a small walk to the lake. There's a lot of biking and hiking in the area. Fishing is always great and just a couple of miles down the road is Mount Princeton Hot Springs.

★★★★★

I often stay at Mt. Princeton camp ground but it was full, this was a fabulous alternative and I believe far superior. Not only do you have water views but it's much more shallow and the kids can play in the water safely! Randy was a fantastic and informative host. Will return !

★★★★★

This campground and toilets are well maintained. The camp Host is helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable of the area attractions. The views of the mountain range are spectacular. The location places you right next to Chalk Lake and the stream flowing off of it. Perfect for hiking and fishing.
