One warning the postcards omit: Lookout Mountain Road's switchbacks were drawn for Model Ts, not modern rigs. Big campers should admire Buffalo Bill's view in the family car and take US-6 or I-70 when the trailer's hitched. The canyon route is prettier anyway.

Golden's summer sport is floating Clear Creek right through downtown: rent a tube, drift past the kayak course, repeat until dinner. The Colorado Railroad Museum lets kids climb through a bone-yard of real locomotives, and Splash Aquatic Park's slides sit next to the Fossil Trace golf course where dinosaur tracks mark the rock. The Buffalo Bill Museum tops Lookout Mountain with the best free view on the Front Range, and Washington Avenue's patios and candy shops finish the day. Adults get the Coors tour; kids get the creek. Everybody wins.
