South Meadows Campground belongs to the federal side of Colorado camping, close to Woodland Park and managed under Pike National Forest. It sits about 47 miles south of downtown Denver as the crow flies, with Woodland Park as the nearest supply town on our board.

Campers rate it 4.5 of 5 across 164 reviews on RVParks.us, our sister directory, where the photo sets and firsthand reports live.

The drive from the metro heads down the I-25 corridor. Fuel up before you leave town, since close-in prices beat every mountain and small-town pump, and build in a margin for summer weekend traffic on the way back. As Colorado camping runs go, this one earns its drive time.

It sits near 7,890 feet, high enough that summer nights drop hard after sunset. Shoulder season here is gorgeous and lightly booked; just confirm the operating dates before a spring or fall trip.

Set expectations before you pack: federal campgrounds mostly run dry, meaning no hookups at the site. Arrive with full fresh tanks and charged batteries, know your generator's posted hours, and plan tank capacity around the length of the stay. The rigs in our fleet list tank sizes plainly, and we'll match you to one that can go the distance off-grid.

Booking a Site Here

Sites here book through recreation.gov on a rolling window, and summer weekends vanish within minutes of opening. Set a calendar reminder for the morning your window releases and be logged in early. First come first served loops, where they exist, fill by Friday noon in July.

Pairing It With a Camper

From the Denver metro this is an easy launch either way: pick the camper up in town and you're backing in with daylight left, or have our crew quote the haul using the listing's radius and fee. Reserve the site in your own name first, then match the rig to the pad length and hookups. Our camper listings state length, tanks and power draw plainly, and we answer campground fit questions all day.

Contact & Location

Season dates, fees and site rules change. Confirm the current details with the operator before you commit a weekend, and if something on this page has gone stale, tell us so the next camper gets it right.

What Campers Say

★★★★☆

Post-Labor Day camping so "first come first served". We came across South Meadows Campground out of necessity but we're pleasantly surprised! Our reservation at another nearby campground proved to be way less than ideal. Very small pads and very sloped grounds.

★★★★★

Peaceful, spacious, and family-friendly! We camped at tent site #41 for 3 nights in June and had a great experience. The site was clean, grassy, and very private, even though we could see neighbors, it was quiet and peaceful. No tent pad meant we could set up wherever we wanted, and there was plenty of space.

★★★★★

I have camped at this campground 5 times now and we really like it. It is close enough to Woodland Park to feel accessible, but it is also in the mountains at elevation with a lot of trees to feel like you are camping in the mountains. These are non electric sites.
