South Rim Campground is a federal campground near Montrose, Colorado, run under Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP. It sits about 165 miles southwest of downtown Denver as the crow flies, with Montrose as the nearest supply town on our board. It runs about 88 sites.

Campers rate it 4.5 of 5 across 209 reviews on RVParks.us, our sister directory, where the photo sets and firsthand reports live.

This is a proper haul: the route runs out the US-285 corridor through the Platte River country, and the smart play is treating the drive as day one of the trip. Fuel and grocery stops get thinner the farther you get from the metro, so leave stocked, watch afternoon weather over the high ground, and arrive with daylight to spare.

It sits near 8,006 feet, high enough that summer nights drop hard after sunset. Shoulder season here is gorgeous and lightly booked; just confirm the operating dates before a spring or fall trip.

Set expectations before you pack: federal campgrounds mostly run dry, meaning no hookups at the site. Arrive with full fresh tanks and charged batteries, know your generator's posted hours, and plan tank capacity around the length of the stay. The rigs in our fleet list tank sizes plainly, and we'll match you to one that can go the distance off-grid.

Booking a Site Here

Sites here book through recreation.gov on a rolling window, and summer weekends vanish within minutes of opening. Set a calendar reminder for the morning your window releases and be logged in early. First come first served loops, where they exist, fill by Friday noon in July.

Pairing It With a Camper

From Denver, treat this one as a proper road trip leg. Most renters pick the camper up in the metro and make the drive part of the trip; long-haul delivery can be quoted with lead time. Reserve the site in your own name first, then match the rig to the pad length and hookups. Our camper listings state length, tanks and power draw plainly, and we answer campground fit questions all day.

Season dates, fees and site rules change. Confirm the current details with the operator before you commit a weekend, and if something on this page has gone stale, tell us so the next camper gets it right.

What Campers Say

★★★★★

We stayed at site B18 over memorial weekend. We had a great time. Sites are close together. There was no bear box at our site. We were greeted often by a Mangrove Warbler bird, he had a nest close by. Deer were active around the campground. Pit toilets were clean and a little walk from out site. Amazing stars and views

★★★★★

A typical national park system campground. The sites are well developed, but no electricity or sewage offered. Bathrooms have toilets and running water, but no showers. This campground does not have a dump station either, so you should plan carefully your water containers and use.

★★★★☆

**This is a review of the campground only** Family of 4 adults who recently stayed at this campground for 5 nights, in order to see and explore the Black Canyon. We were in loop B, which is the only loop with shore power and has only 23 sites. I did not see any power poles in loop A (34 sites) & loop C (32 sites).
