Aspen-Sopris Ranger District

Aspen-Sopris Ranger District is a locally run campground near Carbondale, operated by the local parks office. It sits about 121 miles west of downtown Denver as the crow flies, with Carbondale as the nearest supply town on our board.

This is a proper haul: the route runs up the I-70 mountain corridor, and the smart play is treating the drive as day one of the trip. Fuel and grocery stops get thinner the farther you get from the metro, so leave stocked, watch afternoon weather over the high ground, and arrive with daylight to spare.

At roughly 6,185 feet, the season runs longer here than at the high country camps, and spring or fall trips stay comfortable long after the mountain loops close for the year.
